“Death be not proud”said a great British poet. The sonnet by John Donne famously begins “Death be not proud” and then embarks on a stream of arguments - to prove that man’s greatest fear has no power over him. Donne makes a huge attempt to try to humble it. He tells Death that it is not “mighty and dreadful” because it is merely a functionary, a “slave to fate, chance, kings and desperate men”. And it is hardly to be respected. He points out defiantly that death is merely the beginning of eternal life: “one short sleep past, we live eternally.” But today, one is confused at the turn of events around you. People are giving in to death and falling around like flies. People are planning and plotting and killing not only themselves, but their families, including wives, lovers and children too. There was his small time actress who ganged up with her fiancé, and killed an admirer. A man and his whole family was found dead; his wife and kids were strangulated by him and he consumed poison, apparently due to financial losses. A woman jumped from a six floor balcony to end her life with her two minor kids, as she was fed up with life for her husband was involved with another woman. Today we read about a man who killed himself after having an argument with his ex-wife. In spite of the quality of our lives which has improved many fold, why are we killing ourselves? Has our tolerance levels gone down? There was a time when man defied death. Today we are overpowered by death. What is happening?
